With the worldwide epidemic proportions of obesity, its related morbidities such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer have become an emerging threat for public health. While the strong genetic predisposition for these conditions is a subject of intense research, less is known about the strong influence of various environmental factors on the pathophysiology of obesity.

At the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Sheba Medical Center we established the Endocrinology and Diabetes Research Center with the vision to promote all aspects of research in the field of obesity-related diseases.

The short-chain fatty acid propionate increases glucagon production and insulin resistance in mice and humans

Consumption of propionate, a food ingredient that’s widely used in baked goods, animal feeds, and artificial flavorings, appears to increase levels of several hormones that are associated with risk of obesity and diabetes. Our study, in both humans and mouse, indicated that propionate can trigger a cascade of metabolic events that leads to insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia. Furthermore, in mice, chronic exposure to propionate resulted in weight gain and insulin resistance.
